SOURCING INSIGHT

Ningbo, in Zhejiang province, is a leading hub for mold-making and plastic injection molding, alongside Shenzhen and other eastern Chinese manufacturing regions, supported by a dense ecosystem of toolmakers, raw material suppliers, and machinery manufacturers. High-precision tooling for automotive, medical, and consumer electronics is concentrated here. Tooling MOQs are typically single units (the mold itself), while production runs from the mold usually require 5,000 to 10,000 parts minimum to amortize setup costs. Tooling fabrication typically ranges from 30 to 50 days, depending on part complexity. Critical QC points include steel grade verification (e.g., using genuine H13, P20, or S136 tool steel), hardness testing, dimensional tolerance checking (CMM reports), and gate/parting line optimization. Importers must ensure the finished parts comply with EU REACH regulations, RoHS for electronic housings, and strict food-contact regulations (EC 1935/2004) if the molded plastic is intended for kitchenware or food packaging.

What drives the price

Tooling costs are driven by the cavity count (single versus multi-cavity), mold steel origin and grade, and design complexity (such as hydraulic sliders or lifters). Production unit costs are dominated by raw resin prices (e.g., ABS, PC, PP), cycle times, and scrap rates. Utilizing hot runner systems increases initial tooling costs but reduces scrap and unit cost on high-volume runs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What steel grade should we choose for high-volume injection molds?
For high-volume production (over 500,000 cycles), we recommend hardened steel like S136 or H13. For low-volume prototyping (under 50,000 cycles), pre-hardened steels like P20 or aluminum are cost-effective choices.
How do you verify the dimensional accuracy of the molded plastic parts?
We require a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) dimensional inspection report for the initial T1 sample. We compare these measurements against your 3D CAD files to ensure tolerances (typically ISO 20457) are met before approving mass production.
Are plastic masterbatches and additives compliant with European regulations?
Yes, we verify that all raw resins, color masterbatches, and plasticizers are fully compliant with REACH SVHC limits and RoHS. For food-contact items, we source certified FDA/EU food-grade polymers.
